In the 1920s Malibu Colony began as “Malibu Beach Motion Picture Colony.” It was originally owned by Frederick and May Rindge, founders of Union Oil and Southern California Edison. In 1929, the newly widowed May Rindge faced financial difficulties and leased some of her land to a few wealthy celebrities. Nearly 10 years later, May Rindge began selling the leased properties to those that had built upon them.
